Sally L. Palmer
MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:
My “coaching” (teaching) style is a balance of high expectations and life’s reality. I expect commitment, energy, enthusiasm and hard work. I “coach” my students to be focused on strengthening their individual skills and support other students in the studio to do the same. Most importantly, my goal is to know when a student is experiencing stress, anxiety or is dealing with a personal or school priority in order to understand when to push and when to back off.
I emphasize the need to work hard, focus, and practice. As a “coach” I motivate students to reach their individual potential and do their best. We work cooperatively on life-skills also, such as time management and skillful listening.
ABOUT ME:
I started my piano studies when I was 8 years old. In the fourth grade, I started playing the clarinet in the band. By the fifth grade I was also interested in singing. My advancement up to middle school saw me totally immersed in all three instruments – the piano, the clarinet, and voice. I started accompanying choirs when I was 12 years old, beginning with my eighth grade “swing” choir and my church choir.
I started teaching piano lessons about 40 years ago, and have been doing it off and on for all those years. I’ve been teaching full time private lessons for the past 21 years. I am currently the owner and sole proprietor of the Sally L. Palmer Music Studio.
I am a member of:
In the past I have directed Girls Choir Camps for the Eastside Girls Choir and I also taught music to grades Pre-K through 5th at the French American School of Puget Sound and an Adult Piano Class for a quarter at Lake Washington Vocational & Technical College. I have participated in many musicals as a vocalist, actress, and accompanist. I have played the organ and piano at my church for as long as I can remember.
I hold an Associate Degree of Arts & Sciences in Child Development & Family Relations, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, with a focus on Adolescent Psychology. I participate in continuing education classes, seminars and workshops in these fields, and in piano studies and teaching techniques whenever possible.
I believe the best piano and vocal teachers are those individuals who have the total package:
Skills + Knowledge + Love of Students + Love of Teaching + Love of Music
If I didn’t believe that I had these abilities and traits to offer, I wouldn’t be working as a music educator. Simply put, I LOVE what I do!!
